The History
This game did not start off as "Sea Commander", but instead as the extremely well realized creation of two young boys, Alex and Cameron MacLeod. It is a great example of how kids' imaginations and creativity should never be underestimated or overlooked. Between the two of them, they developed an entire board game, complete with a board (rectangular at the time), cards, and even pieces made from polymer clay! They established rules and gameplay, much of which has been carried through to Sea Commander. In all, it was a really well formed game, and especially for two young boys.
Years and years later, Alex met Nick Steglich through some friends and musical endeavors. It was in this time while Alex and Nick were becoming friends, when Alex - seeing Nick's love of gaming and art and putting projects together - told him about the game, and really got the ball rolling on this project. Miraculously, Alex and Cameron still had the game, and organized a meeting to go over it all and start work on making it into something real - at a root level, just for them to enjoy. But once people started playing it, it became clear that this should be available to everyone, and thus, Sea Commander was born!
We are still very much in the design process, though we have ironed out a lot of the major kinks and gotten the gameplay to a pretty consistent time and fairness across all areas, and in the meantime, have been working with Lucretia Seabrook on game art. We are all very excited to see what she comes up with, as we all love her particluar style of artwork.
By the end of the year, we hope to have prototyped a couple of complete games so that we can take it around and play test it with different audiences. For now though, we have a working version and we are conducting play tests and collecting data when we are able, though this Covid-19 thing has slowed us a little. But we are determined, because we really, truly love this game and think you will as well.
We are also still working on this website and our general online presence, so please bear with us while we get everything together. We promise that there will be more content, including pictures and graphics as we make them. We are fortunate to be in control of, and responsible for every aspect of this game withon our small, self-contained team of 4. So our overhead is small in these early stages, and only costs us time and a small amount for physical materials. But as we ramp up our efforts and start to develop working prototypes and source out to manufacturers and the like, we will need increasingly more money, and would be forever grateful if you'd be willing to donate. We will be setting up a KickStarter soon, but in the meantime, if you would like to help support us in some way, or even just have a question or comment, please visit our Contact Page and send us an email, or visit us on Facebook and message us there.
Thank you, and we really hope you will continue to follow our progress with this game!
